Administrators’ Message

It’s difficult to believe we are already one month into the school year!  Thank you for helping make the start of the year so successful for our students/your children.  September was a busy month.  In addition to the regular start up routines, we had our first Catholic School Council Meeting, held our ‘Toonies for Terry” Terry Fox Run, and had our annual Meet the Teacher Night and School BBQ.  A great big THANKS to all our parents and staff members who go above and beyond the call of duty to make St. Kateri such a special place.   October is a busy month, so please be sure to read and make note of the information in this newsletter.

On behalf of all the staff members here at St. Kateri, we would like to wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving.

God Bless,

Mr. R. Setler                 Mr. D. Lynch

Focus on Mathematics

Our world is rapidly changing. Technology is evolving at light speed. And, more than ever before, strong Math Skills are critical for your child’s success in today’s world. The Mathematics Curriculum identifies seven key processes students engage in as they learn and use math. The seven processes are:

Problem Solving

Reasoning and Proving

Selecting Tools and Computational Strategies

We will be focusing on these processes in our monthly newsletters, highlighting one each month. We are also

going to include tips and suggestions to help your child with math at home.

What can I do to support my child’s math learning?

 Encourage your child. Remind them that success comes from hard work and perseverance, and that making mistakes is part of learning and our Growth Mindset.

 Be positive about math! Avoid saying “I was never good at math” or “I never liked math.” Show them that you think math is important and interesting. Look for opportunities for math to be a natural part of your conversations.

 Ensure your child keeps up with his/her math homework. Make sure that your child catches up if they were away from school because math concepts build on one another.

 Be available to talk with your child about his/her math work. But do not do it for them. Give them time to figure out the answers on their own. When your child needs support, ask questions instead of showing your child directly how to do it. Allow your child to share the method used in class. If you are not familiar with the method, ask them to explain it to you. This will help them to understand it better, as well

Next Month:

We will highlight Problem Solving happening at St. Kateri CES

Halloween Themed Dance-a-thon Fundraiser – Thursday, October 25th

Our annual Catholic School Council Fundraiser is scheduled for October 25th this year and is going to be ‘spooktacular’!  Fundraising packages will be sent home October 4th and there will be loads of prizes for students and classes that fundraise the most!  Fundraising allows to school to augment and offer programs and initiatives that benefit students we are not able to provide through our school budget alone.  Last year, fundraising efforts supported the mural paintings in the office and gym, Family Math Night prizes, Shrove (Pancake) Tuesday, charge bins for Chromebooks, bussing to events such as our school Track and Field Meet, Gr. 8 Grad, guest speaker ‘D. O.’ and two plays – The Paper Bag Princess and Tree Boy.

Fit Bit October 2018

Have a Healthy Halloween!

Halloween is such an exciting time of year for children. There are thoughts of costumes, parties and of course, sugary treats. Your child can enjoy Halloween without abandoning good eating habits completely. You can use Halloween as a time to be a role model. Halloween offers an excellent opportunity to teach your children about healthy eating and active living. Don’t forget to send healthy snacks with your child for classroom celebrations!

Use these tips to keep your child healthy and the treats under control

  • Set expectations early. Teach children that candy is a treat and not an everyday food.
  • Help your child divide up a few favourite pieces of candy into little treat bags to enjoy once or twice per week at a specified time (i.e., after dinner). This helps them to learn portion control, a very important part of healthy eating.
  • Store extra candy in a cupboard out of reach. It is wise not to store the candy at eye level to avoid temptation for the whole family.

Make Halloween a Time to Be Active

  • Halloween is a great time to be active. The cool fall weather is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
  • Plan to go for a walk or bike ride as a family.
  • Hike and explore some of the beautiful trails in our Region.
  • Visit a local pumpkin patch and pick your own pumpkins and gourds. Some pumpkin patches offer corn mazes, haunted houses, and hay rides.
  • Visit a park to play in the leaves.
  • Join your children and walk through the neighbourhood or malls to look at the Halloween decorations.
