Christmas Concert

Parents…don’t forget The St Kateri Christmas Concert is tomorrow at 8:45.  Please park on side streets as parking at the school is very limited.  Merry Christmas!

Christmas came a little early for the St. Kateri Bulldogs

Sporting our new jerseys that they will be wearing in the new year are our girls’ volleyball and boys’ basketball teams.

A HUGE THANK YOU to the following organizations for their donations that made purchasing the new jerseys possible:

Kitchener SW Optimist Club – $1000.00

Waterloo Region Catholic Schools Foundation – $1000.00

St. Kateri Catholic School Council – $500.00

Finally, thank you to Nick Renda and HOF Sports for designing and supplying these awesome jerseys!  Go Bulldogs!

Fire Alarm

Parents, there was a fire alarm malfunction which caused it to go off in error. This pushed our lunch back until 11:30. The system is being repaired and will be ready for Monday.

Pizza Lunch Today

Parents – please be aware that if you ordered a pizza lunch for your children through ESNS, it was delayed today due to a misunderstanding with the supplier.  All orders were delivered, but did not arrive until about 1:30 p.m.

Teachers allowed students to eat their lunch when it arrived.  ESNS and the pizza company apologize for the mishap.

December Newsletter

Administrators’ Message

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the support you continue to provide your children with their education.  We value your commitment to your child’s learning and it was great to see so many of you here November 8th for our Parent-Teacher-Student Conferences.

We are entering the season of Advent and we are preparing our hearts for the coming of Jesus with joyful anticipation. If your schedule allows, please consider attending our Advent Mass on December 5th at 10 a.m. in our gym.

Please also consider taking part in our Angel Tree Program this year. Students and families can select an angel from the school tree in our foyer and purchase a gift for a child in need. All unwrapped gifts must be under the tree by Dec. 14th – thank you in advance for your generosity!

A reminder that our Christmas Concert has moved to a new format this year.  The concert for parents and families will take place the morning of Friday, December 21st in our school gym.  The first classes will be on stage by 8:45 a.m. and we look forward to seeing you!  Please keep in mind parking at our school is very limited, so visitors will need to park on a side street.

We wish you all a very joyous holiday season! School will resume on January 7th . Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Congratulations St. Kateri Bulldogs Girls’ Basketball Team – 2018 Waterloo Catholic DSB Champs!

Congrats to our girls’ b-ball team who defeated Pere Rene in the finals of the WCDSB Regional Tournament at RIM Park on November 20th.

Thank you to coaches, Ms. Filipovic and Mrs. Holmes, for the great job they did guiding the squad to an undefeated season!

Once again our beautiful tree is up in the front foyer of our school.   Christmas is a magical time of year and as the Christmas holidays draw closer, we would like to do what we can to help families in need of support this Christmas.  Let’s make this a memorable Christmas and light up the faces of children in our parish on Christmas Day.

In the next few days our tree will be transformed from a plain tree to a magical angel tree.  Students are invited to come and pick a paper angel from the tree and purchase a gift for a child. The gifts will be brought to St. Aloysius Parish where they will be distributed.

Please bring unwrapped gifts to the library before December 13th  as the donated gifts will be delivered to St Aloysius Parish on Friday December 14th

Your Angel Tree Representative,

Mrs. Schneider

Visitors and Volunteers.

All visitors and volunteers need to report to the office when visiting the school. Please sign in and pick up a volunteer or visitor badge from the office staff.

We ask that parents/guardians pick up their children from the main office, not their classrooms and enter the school only from the front doors.  Please refrain from entering the school from the YMCA daycare or from the back of the school.

For your children’s safety we need to know who is in the school at all times.  Thank you for your co operation with this matter.

December’s Math Focus: Reasoning and Proving

In today’s Mathematics classrooms, students are expected to not only find the solution to a problem, but also to be able to explain their reasoning or their choice of strategy.

Mathematicians need to:

  • develop and apply reasoning skills to make mathematical opinions, assess these opinions, and justify their conclusions
  • plan and construct an organized mathematical argument
  • make sense of math through reasoning
  • solving problems with an emphasis on reasoning.
  • explain their thinking by answering the question “How do you know?”
  • make predictions
  • test hypotheses

At Home

Supporting your child at home to develop these skills is necessary to acquire these very important skills.  While helping with their math homework, ask a few of the following questions:

* Why does your answer make sense?

* How do you know your solution is right?

* How could you check that solution?

* Show how you know your answer is true.

* Explain the reasoning/strategy behind your answer.

Asking these questions will help your child to develop the necessary skills and understanding of the problem. Not only will they be able to show you how to find an answer, but why the answer is correct.
