Fundraiser in Support of Luka Sikic and Family

Fundraiser in Support of Luka Sikic and Family

Grade 8 student, Luka Sikic has been a student of St. Kateri since JK.

He is a very caring and social young man and is always willing to lend a hand.

Because of these qualities, Luka was this year’s recipient of the

St. Kateri Beacon of Hope Award earlier this month.

Luka’s fight with cancer started Feb 27, 2016.  He was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myeloid Leukemia) which caused a blood clot in his leg and 2 clots in his heart. Luka and his mother moved into Victoria Children’s Hospital, where he went through three rounds of chemo, before the leukemia went into remission on June 6, 2016.  In July of that year, Luka was admitted to Sick Kids Children’s Hospital in Toronto and received a bone marrow transplant. Luka had a 10 day prep chemo to wipe out his marrow and welcome the new one.  He stayed in isolation for 3 weeks.  He had some issues with his clots which made the transition back to London (where he would be monitored) a lot harder.   Eventually, on October 14, 2016, Luka received the green light from his medical team to return home.  Luka and his parents travelled back and forth to London for his follow up visits.  At first it was two check ups per week, then one every week, then one every two weeks.  Eventually, Luka’s check-ups were taking place every four months.  On a recent follow up – April 3, 2019 – a day before his birthday, his numbers were a little low, which was attributed to a cold he was fighting.  Luka went back two weeks later and his doctors noticed some irregularities in his blood work.  Luka went back for a bone biopsy on May 1, 2019.  That biopsy confirmed his cancer had come back because 10% of his bone marrow had reappeared.  On May 6, 2019 Luka and his mother moved back into the hospital in London and he started his first round of chemo.  We pray this round worked.   Luka will undergo one more round of chemo this summer and then head back to Sick Kids for another bone marrow transplant.  Please keep Luka in your prayers.

“Luke’s Community Fundraising Program”

Luke Hodgson is a grade 5 St. Kateri student that experienced a serious health issue in late 2018.  Luke and his family were grateful for the support he received from St. Kateri School and the community.

Luke’s Community Fundraising Program” was established by Luke to raise money for noteworthy causes in our community by combining his artistic ability with his passion for helping and caring for others.

Luke is a gifted young artist and with the help of his parents ran a successful fundraiser that raised over $20,000 from the sale of his artwork in support of the children’s hospital that helped him.

Now it’s time to give back again and this time in support of St. Kateri and fellow student Luka Sikic and his family

Thank you for participating in this extremely worthy event!
