  • No Halloween masks please – we will all need to wear our other masks 😉
  • Students will have an opportunity to participate in a colouring contest (templates shared with teachers) for their chance to win one of nine Chapters/Indigo gift cards – submissions are due to the office by the end of the day Thursday
  • Teachers have the opportunity of using an art class to make Halloween/fall themed paper bag lanterns
  • On Friday, classes will go on a ‘Spooky Walk’ – one class at a time, distanced and masked – through the gym, to check out the tea light lit paper bag lanterns made by students
  • Huge thank you to the parents on our CSAC Halloween sub-committee for organizing the colouring contest and lantern art activity!

Staff Updates

Mrs. Dasilva (JK/K) and her husband are expecting their first child in the coming days, AND M. Moustakas and his wife are expecting their sixth child in the next week or so.  Please keep their families in your prayers during these exciting times.  Beginning tomorrow, Mrs. Ritz will be replacing Mrs. Dasilva and Madam Correa will be filling in for M. Moustakas for the next six weeks.

Health & Safety Reminders

Thank you to all of our parents for doing your part with keeping your children/our students safe while here at school.  We truly are ‘all in this together’ so thank you for not only keeping the health of your children & family in mind, but everyone else’s family too.  A reminder that Public Health is asking parents (on behalf of their children) & staff to complete the COVID-19 self-assessment every day before coming to school.  The self-assessment tool has been updated and now reflects two tiers of symptoms.  Here is a link to the online screening form:   http://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/

Student Washroom Concern

Parents – please take some time to talk with your children about a concerning issue at our school.  Below is the announcement that was shared with our Junior and Intermediate students today:

A VERY IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT – both the girls’ and boys’ Jr/Intermediate washrooms are being vandalized.  If you are one of the students making a mess in the washrooms, kindly stop.  If you know of someone, or see someone, vandalizing the washrooms, please speak to Mrs. Kavanagh or Mr. Lynch.

We would like to ensure students are: respecting school property, respectful of each other (ensuring washrooms are left in good condition for other students), and respectful of our custodial staff who have had to spend more time cleaning our student washrooms.

Class Restructuring & Teacher Changes in Kindergarten and Grade 7 due to Changes in Learning Modality

October 7, 2020

Dear Parents,

Due to the movement of students from conventional learning at St. Kateri to online learning at St. Isidore, we have been directed by our board to reduce the number of classes we currently have, by one, effective October 13th.  As a result, the following classes/students will be affected:

  • Jardine will move from teaching Kindergarten at St. Kateri to a teaching position at St. Isidore (online)
  • Gajewski will move from teaching Gr. 7 to teaching the Kindergarten class currently being taught by Ms. Jardine
  • Half of Mrs. Gajewski’s Gr. 7 students will move to Mr. Martins’ class, the other half to Mr. Nicholl’s class

We will be meeting with affected students today and have asked your child’s new teacher to connect with you either by email or a phone call before the end of the week.  Our staff has done its best to make changes/moves with students’ best academic and social needs in mind.

Should you have any questions, please feel free to call us at the school.

Thank you in advance for your patience and understanding,

Ms. Rosemary Kavanagh                            Mr. Dave Lynch

Vice Principal                                               Principal

First Communion and Confirmation

Congratulations to our students who celebrated the sacrament of First Holy Communion and those who celebrated the sacrament of Confirmation this past weekend at St. Aloysius Parish!  May God bless you and guide you as you continue your faith journey.  Both sacraments were scheduled to take place in the spring but were postponed due to safety precautions.  Thank you to our pastor, Fr. Melvin, for your faith leadership in our school community.

Physical Distancing Reminders at Recess

Staff continue to remind students to stay physically distanced at recess when talking to friends, since most students choose to remove their masks at this time.  We are asking parents to reinforce the same message when speaking to children at home so we can maintain a learning environment that is safe and respectful.

Parents should know we also provide students with daily reminders regarding use of basketballs (one per student at designated hoops) and soccer balls (games not permitted at this time and only the owner of the ball can use her/his hands).

PA Day and Thanksgiving Weekend

We would like to wish everyone in our school community a very Happy Thanksgiving weekend.  A reminder that schools are closed, Monday, October 12th to celebrate Thanksgiving and schools is closed for students this Friday, October 9th, which is a PA Day for staff.

Drop off & Pick Up Procedures

Thank you to our parents who have been doing a great job keeping children/students safe when dropping off or picking up their children.  Parents of older children, we encourage you to follow our ‘Drive to Five’ (drop off a block to two away from the school) initiative to avoid contributing to the congestion in our drop off zone.  Parents choosing to drive their children home at the end of the day, thank you for parking on one of our side streets and walking your children safely to your vehicle.

New Math Curriculum

Parents, you have probably heard by now the Ministry of Education has released a new Math Curriculum.  Teachers are receiving professional development on how to transition to the new curriculum effectively.   Please check out the parent resources on the Ministry’s website: https://www.ontario.ca/page/new-math-curriculum-grades-1-8
