Lent

This Wednesday marks the beginning of our Lenten Journey 2021.  We will observe and celebrate Lent in a way that is meaningful and safe. Ashes will not be distributed this year.  We will come together virtually and reflect on the meaning of the season and begin the 40-day journey as a faith community. There is a special video from Bishop Crosby that will be shared with our students. The school will focus on the three pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting and Almsgiving. We will look for ways to demonstrate our faith during Lent and rejoice when Easter arrives. Please see the link here from the Diocese for more information regarding Ash Wednesday and how to participate in Ash Wednesday at Home.

Dear Parents / Guardians of WCDSB Elementary School Children:

Please note that your final opportunity to state your preference for a transfer for your child’s elementary school learning mode begins at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16, 2021, and ends at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021The actual transition date is Monday, March 8th.

A special online survey has been created for you to state your choice. The survey is not yet active. It will be activated at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 16th.

The form will be available on our main webpage in the spotlight section – www.wcdsb.ca

You only need to complete the survey if you are looking for a transfer.

Please ensure you complete the survey during the stated February 16th to 18th time frame, as there will be no requests for changes granted after the survey closes. Additionally, as this is the final transition point for the 2020-21 school year, there will be no requests to change learning mode granted through to the end of June.

Again — the survey closes at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 18, 2021

Thank you for taking the time to state your choice and for assisting us in having the staffing, resources, and programming in place to assist the ongoing learning and success of your children.

Drop off and Pick up Procedures for St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Elementary School – Mid-Year Reminder

Drop off and Pick up Procedures for St. Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Elementary School – Mid-Year Reminder

Please make note of the following information and adhere to our school drop off and pick up procedures that are in place to keep your children safe.

We encourage students in Gr. 4 – 8 who live within 1.6 km of the school (0.8 km for JK – Gr. 3 students) to walk to school.  Those who live further than 1.6 km (0.8 km JK – Gr. 3) are eligible for bussing.

Drive to Five Drop Off (8:10-8:25 a.m.)

Parents who choose to drive their children to school are asked to either:

  1. “Drive to Five” (BEST OPTION for older students) – Drop your child off a block or two away from the school (5 min. walk).  You will avoid contributing to the congestion in front of the school (bus loading zone) and the walk will do your child good – they will be that much more alert to begin their day!  Black Walnut Drive (beside Carlyle Park), Perin Place, Vintage Cres or Nathaniel Cres are all good options.
  2. Use the school’s driveway (SECOND BEST OPTION) – Pull into the school driveway and drop your children off in front of the school in front of or behind the school bus zone.  In order to keep traffic moving and keep the bus zone free from traffic, parents who choose to pull into the school driveway may not get out of their vehicles and children may only exit the vehicle from the passenger side.   Please do not stop or park in our Visitor Parking spots or in the center through lane, which is a Fire Route.  St. Kateri parents are also not eligible to park in the daycare parking lot or school parking lot.

Pick Up (2:30-2:55)

Parents choosing to pick up children at the end of the school day cannot do so using our school driveway as it needs to remain free of traffic for our eight school busses.   The lane on the right is reserved for buses and the Visitor Parking spots are not a safe option nor were they designed for end of day pick up.  Parents are also not able to use the Daycare parking lot, which is reserved parking.  At the end of the school day, parents are required to park on a side street and have their children cross safely at the cross walk in front of the school.  Please park on one of the side streets and help your children walk safely to your parked vehicle.

The City of Kitchener works closely with all schools to ensure the streets around them are safe for students, parents and others in the community.  Please keep these City of Kitchener bylaws in mind if you choose to drive your children to school.

Parking is not permitted:

  • Within 1.5 metres of a driveway
  • Within 3 metres of a fire hydrant
  • Within 9 metres of an intersection
  • In a bike lane
  • In a school bus loading zone

Note: Please also be aware of all the no parking/no stopping areas around our school.

Each year, the city receives complaints about drivers in school zones. Here are some of the practices to avoid:

  • Stopping or Parking in a restricted zone
  • Blocking a driveway when you park your car
  • Travelling too quickly
  • Making U-turns
  • Parking in a driveway without the homeowner’s permission

Please be respectful of residents who live on streets around our school.

By-law Enforcement staff regularly patrol school areas to help keep everyone safe by watching for infractions.

By working together, we can ensure St. Kateri continues to be a safe, nurturing, and engaging school where your children will meet with success.  Thank you in advance for your understanding, cooperation and support.

Please feel free to contact us at the school should you have any questions or concerns.

Bulldog Bulletin – Week of February 8, 2021

Bulldog Bulletin – Week of February 8, 2021

Welcome Back Bulldogs!

Thank you to all of our awesome students, parents and staff members for your outstanding efforts these past number of weeks!  We are REALLY looking forward to seeing all of you back at school again on Monday!

However, as we all know, we are still in the midst of a global pandemic, and we need to do everything we can to stay safe and healthy.  Therefore, we would like to let you know our enhanced safety protocols that will be in place when we all return to face to face learning.

Parent Responsibilities:

  • Complete the MANDATORY School Screening Self-Assessment for your child each day before they come to school.  When you take this assessment, as you know, you will either receive a green check mark, a circle with a line, or a red X.  If you do not receive a green check mark, please do not send your child to school.  Contact the main office and follow the next steps provided by the assessment tool.  The tool is found here:

https://covid-19.ontario.ca/school-screening/

  • Keep the main office informed if your child, or anyone in your household, is waiting for their COVID-19 test results.
  • Continue to follow Public Health protocols – only go out for essentials; do not gather in groups; wear masks when physical distancing cannot be maintained; if you have travelled outside of the country, quarantine for 14 days.  These are just a few of the actions that have been bringing the numbers in this region down – please continue to do your part.
  • IF possible, send TWO (minimum) or THREE (preferable) masks each day with your child.  One mask is for indoor use, one for outdoor (recess) and one is a backup – in case a mask gets wet, falls on the ground, etc.
  • It’s going to be cold next week – please be sure to send your children with warm clothing.

School Responsibilities:

  • Provide all classes with a presentation Monday morning – reminding students of safety measures we have in place at school and rules they need to follow
  • NEW – all students will wear masks both when they are indoors and when they are outside at recess.
  • Students will continue to wash their hands/sanitize their hands frequently throughout the day
  • Physical Distancing protocols will continue to be enforced through reminders and modeling – in hallways, classrooms and on the schoolyard
  • Bus Students must only sit in their assigned seat and must keep their masks on while on the bus.  Bus drivers will continue to report any issues to the school.
  • The school will continue to monitor students for symptoms – if there are any present, the school will conduct the ‘School Screening Self-Assessment’ tool with them and follow the direction provided
  • All staff members will need to complete a self-assessment prior to entering the building each day
  • We will follow all Public Health guidelines and advice should they contact us regarding a positive case or any high risk contacts with the school
  • Update our procedures as Public Health guidelines change

Chromebooks Loaned to Students During School Closure

Students and Parents – if you borrowed a Chromebook to use for online learning during our school closure, please return it to the school on Monday. Students and/or staff will sanitize the devices before they are back in use.

Big Red WCDSB Pencil Case

Students and Parents – please don’t forget to bring the big red pencil case that went home before Christmas Break, and all of its contents, on Monday too!  The pencil case was outfitted with learning materials students require at school.

The survey will be found on our school board’s website and will only be completed by parents wishing for this type of change.  The actual date students will transition – to St. Kateri from St. Isidore OR from St. Isidore to St. Kateri – is March 8th.
