All Star Readers and Strong Start programs
Dear Parent/ Guardian,
Here is an amazing volunteer opportunity for you to get involved in our school community. St. Kateri school runs two programs that help the students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 reach their full potential in reading.
The “Strong Start” program is directed at SK and Grade 1 students who need extra help learning some early reading skills. It involves playing short games and activities in a one on one setting. You will help the young students practise their early literacy skills (letters, sounds and words). Two, 2-hour training sessions will be held off site. Once you have received training, we ask for a minimum time commitment of 30 minutes, once a week for a 10-week period. We hope to run at least two sessions this school year.
The All Stars Reading Program is also an early intervention program that runs all year long. It supports early readers as they move into reading longer texts. The focus is on reading strategies along with learning sounds and word recognition. The students become independent and successful readers with the help of an adult. Training sessions are on site, at St. Kateri school for this program. A police check will be required for both programs.
If you are interested in volunteering in either or both programs, or have any questions, please call the school at 519-895-1716. Mrs. Costa or Mrs. Harney will happily answer any of your questions.
We look forward to working with you.
