St. Kateri CES March Newsletter
Although it was February that went out like a lamb (the temperature hit a record high of 15 C on the 28th), the forecast is indicating March is coming in like a proverbial lion. For those of us looking forward to warmer temperatures returning , and staying, it’s comforting to know Spring is only three short weeks away.
February was another busy month at St. Kateri. In addition to the great curricular learning opportunities provided by our staff, students participated in: Our Ash Wednesday Liturgy, Valentine’s Day Celebration, Intramurals and our School Council Sponsored Winter Dance-a-thon Fundraiser. In addition, students had an opportunity to sign-up for our Folk Dance Team. At the inter-school level, our Girls’ Volleyball Team wrapped up a successful season, and our Boys’ Basketball Team advanced to the playoffs with a last minute, come from behind one point thriller over St. John Paul II. Go Bulldogs Go!
Our exceptional teaching staff continued improving our practice by meeting in Divisional Teams in February to moderate (collaboratively assess) student work and Mathematics learning tasks involving Proportional Reasoning.
On behalf of our staff, we would like to thank Our Catholic School Council for organizing our Dance-a-thon Fundraiser. Final numbers have not yet been determined, but through the generosity of parents, relatives and friends, we will be able to augment many student learning programs in our school due to our fundraising efforts. Thank you for your support!

St. Kateri Winter Dance-a-thon Fundraiser Update
The Dance-a-thon was a wonderful success! It was held on Friday February 23rd here in the St. Kateri gym and DJ TK did an awesome job spinning tunes and getting kids active and engaged. Our students had a great time dancing to the music and enjoyed the glow and snacks as well.
Our three fundraising winners are:
Bryan in Grade 1 – $100 gift card for being the top pledge seller in the school
Katie in Grade 7 – $50 gift card for raising the second most amount of pledges
Jeongyn in Grade 2 – $25 gift card for winning the draw that included everyone who raised at least $40 in pledges
It is always wonderful to see this community come together to have fun and raise money to enhance the students’ experiences here at St. Kateri. Our school raised more than $7000 which will go towards paying for the new murals in our gym, our Motivational Speaker Series (Duane Gibson and two spring plays), Catch-a-Kid and Student of the Week Prizes, and new phys-ed equipment. Thank you to all who donated and volunteered their time to make this event a success.

Congratulations to the Intermediate Girls’ Volleyball Team who finished their season this month. They demonstrated excellent teamwork, sportsmanship, skills and team spirit this year. Your coaches are very proud of your accomplishment. We hope that the Grade 8s continue playing in high school and we look forward to having the Grade 7s back next year as part of our team!
Intermediate Boys Basketball
Congrats to our Boys Basketball Team who finished league play with a record of 6 wins and 2 losses. With their third place finish, the team made the playoffs, where they lost a heartbreaker to a strong team from St. Luke’s. Our Grade 8s showed good leadership and led the way in terms of scoring and rebounding. We wish them all the best in high school next year. The ten returning Grade 6 and 7 students are looking forward to playing a larger role in next year!

World Water Day
World Water Day, on 22 March every year, is about focusing attention on the importance of water. The theme for World Water Day 2018 is ‘Nature for Water’ – exploring nature-based solutions to the water challenges we face in the 21st century.
