Administrators’ Message

It’s difficult to believe we are already one month into the school year!  Thank you for helping to make the start of the year so successful for our students/your children.  September was a busy month.  In addition to the regular start up routines, we moved two classes into new portables, had our first Catholic School Council Meeting of the year, held our ‘Toonies for Terry” Terry Fox Run, and had our annual Meet the Teacher Night and School BBQ.  A great big THANKS to all our parents and staff members who go above and beyond the call of duty to make St. Kateri such a special place.

In addition to the great learning taking place this month, please make note of the following events and activities:

October 2 – Picture Day

October 3 – School Council Meeting

October 6- Grade 6-8 Soccer Trip to University Stadium

October 9 – Thanksgiving Monday (no school)

October 11- JK/SK Steckle Farm Trip

On behalf of all the staff members here at St. Kateri, I’d like to wish you a very relaxing Thanksgiving.

Intermediate Boys Baseball

The Intermediate Boys’ 3-Pitch team was a powerhouse to be reckoned with this year.  A very talented infield core, supported by a fast and nimble outfield and powerful bats, was a sight to behold, setting a new standard for excellence at St. Kateri.  The boys won their round robin games handily and advanced to a semifinal with the championship in their sights.  Unfortunately, their opponents, who had been trailing all game, came out with one spectacular inning of hitting, scoring more runs in that one inning than St. Kateri had given up over the entire rest of the day.  After a hard-fought comeback attempt, the boys found themselves on the wrong side of a tough 7-6 score.  Despite falling short of their goals though, the team demonstrated great enthusiasm and respect while having a great afternoon having fun together.

Intermediate Girls Baseball

Coaches Mrs. Pizarro and Mrs. Haffner, would like to congratulate the Intermediate Girls’ 3-Pitch team on an excellent performance at the tournament held on September 26th at Wilson Park, where they came in third place!  We are extremely proud of the exceptional sports-person-ship and school spirit demonstrated by our wonderful students.  Our exceptional students are:  Skylar Elliot, Rachel Frank, Olivia Grebinski, Holly Hilts, Lauren Holmes, Jessica Hunt, Mackenzie Norris, Siara Persaud, Grace Porter, Maddy Robertson, Sierra Sutton, and Sofia Villar.  Congratulations!

Junior Soccer

A big congratulations goes out to the Junior Bulldogs Soccer team that went undefeated in this year’s tournament at RIM park.  We played 3 great games beating John Sweeney, Our Lady of Grace and Canadian Martyr’s in the round robin.  In the finals we played against a tough St. John Paul II team who were also coming to the finals 3 and 0.  With team work and  great determination we were able to score early and hold on for the victory.  Way to go Bulldogs!!!  We are super proud of you.  A big thank you goes out to all of our parent drivers and everyone that was able to make it to cheer us on.

Fit Bit October 2017

 Have a Healthy Halloween!

Halloween is such an exciting time of year for children. There are thoughts of costumes, parties and of course, sugary treats. Your child can enjoy Halloween without abandoning good eating habits completely. You can use Halloween as a time to be a role model. Halloween offers an excellent opportunity to teach your children about healthy eating and active living. Don’t forget to send healthy snacks with your child for classroom celebrations!

Use these tips to keep your child healthy and the treats under control

  • Set expectations early. Teach children that candy is a treat and not an everyday food.
  • Help your child divide up a few favourite pieces of candy into little treat bags to enjoy once or twice per week at a specified time (i.e., after dinner). This helps them to learn portion control, a very important part of healthy eating.
  • Store extra candy in a cupboard out of reach. It is wise not to store the candy at eye level to avoid temptation for the whole family.

Make Halloween a Time to Be Active

  •  Halloween is a great time to be active. The cool fall weather is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
  • Plan to go for a walk or bike ride as a family.
  • Hike and explore some of the beautiful trails in our Region.
  • Visit a local pumpkin patch and pick your own pumpkins and gourds. Some pumpkin patches offer corn mazes, haunted houses, and hay rides.
  • Visit a park to play in the leaves.
  • Join your children and walk through the neighbourhood or malls to look at the Halloween decorations.
